What does “10-key” actually mean?
10-key refers to the numeric keypad — the block of number keys usually sitting to the right of a full-size keyboard, holding 0 to 9 along with the decimal point and the arithmetic keys. It is also written as ten key, ten-key, or 10 key.
A 10-key test measures how quickly and accurately you enter numbers using that keypad. That is a genuinely separate skill from typing words, and it is the one data entry, accounting, banking and clerical roles are hiring for.
KPH and WPM are the same typing in different units
Data entry job adverts usually quote KPH, keystrokes per hour. Typing tests usually report WPM, words per minute. They are not different skills, only different units, which is why a tool that reports one and not the other leaves you guessing.
WPM conventionally treats five keystrokes as one word. So the conversion is simply:
- KPH ÷ 300 = WPM. Five keystrokes per word, sixty minutes per hour.
- 10,000 KPH is therefore about 33 WPM of continuous numeric entry.
- WPM × 300 = KPH, if the advert quotes KPH and your practice tool only shows WPM.
This test reports both, so you can answer whichever number the employer asked for. What counts as a good figure varies by employer and by role, so check the advert rather than trusting a number you read online.
How to type 10-key by touch
Touch typing the keypad means finding the keys without looking, and it rests on one physical detail: the 5 key has a raised bump, exactly like F and J on the main keyboard. That bump is your home position.
- Rest your index, middle and ring fingers on 4, 5 and 6. Feel for the bump on 5 rather than looking down.
- Index finger covers the left column: 1, 4 and 7.
- Middle finger covers the centre column: 2, 5 and 8.
- Ring finger covers the right column: 3, 6 and 9.
- Thumb takes 0. The little finger reaches Enter and the arithmetic keys.
- Return to 4-5-6 after every reach, so your hand never drifts.
Speed comes from never looking down, not from moving faster. If you are checking the keypad between fields, that is the thing to fix first.
What counts as a good 10-key speed

Experienced operators sit around 12,000 to 15,000 KPH. Below about 8,000 KPH you are still building the touch habit rather than being slowed by it.

“10-key proficiency” on a job listing rarely comes with a definition. Read it as entering numeric data by touch at a speed and accuracy the employer will test, and treat that 8,000 to 10,000 KPH floor as the working meaning unless the posting names its own figure. A speed quoted without an accuracy figure is not worth much either way. Employers generally set an accuracy floor and rank on speed only among the candidates who clear it, which is the subject of the next section.
Accuracy matters more than speed in data entry
A mistyped digit in an invoice, an account number or a date is not a typo that a reader silently corrects — it is wrong data. That is why this test reports mistakes and accuracy beside your speed rather than hiding them behind a headline number.

Is a 10-key test the same as a typing test?

Can I take this on a laptop with no numeric keypad?
