Three minutes is where concentration starts to cost you, and that is the whole point of it. The first minute shows your sprint; the third shows what you can hold. The gap between them is more useful than either number on its own, and it is the first thing a longer assessment will expose.

Where fatigue starts to show
Three minutes is the shortest test that catches you tiring. Up to about two minutes most people hold their opening rhythm; somewhere past that, reading ahead gets less reliable, mistakes arrive more often, and correcting them eats into the score.
That makes 180 seconds the useful step between a 2 minute benchmark and a 5 minute job assessment: long enough to expose the problem, short enough to repeat while you work on it.
How many words is that?
Words typed = net WPM × 3. At 40 net WPM that is about 120 words; at 60 net WPM, about 180. Because net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors, that counts the words you got right rather than the words you attempted — the distinction is set out in how typing scores work.
Reading the drop
Compare this result against your one-minute score. The gap is the interesting number, not either score on its own.
- A small drop, within a few WPM — you have a pace you could hold through real work. Push the speed.
- A large drop — your speed depends on concentration you cannot sustain. Practise at the longer length rather than the shorter one.
- Accuracy falling as the test runs on — slow down deliberately for a few sessions. Sustained accuracy is what produces sustained speed, not the other way round.
Whichever pattern you see, track it over several sessions rather than reacting to one run — a single result varies by several WPM either way. The progress tracker keeps the history.
Why the third minute is harder than the first two
Fluent typing runs on a buffer. You are reading several words ahead of your hands, so the next keystroke is already decided before the current one lands. That buffer is what makes typing feel effortless, and it is the first thing to go when attention drifts.
When the buffer shortens, you stop typing words and start typing letters. Speed falls a little. Accuracy falls more, because a letter typed without the word behind it is far easier to get wrong. Then each mistake costs twice: once to make, once to correct, and a third time in the concentration spent noticing it.
That compounding is why the drop between minute one and minute three is rarely gentle. It is also why practising at one minute does not fix it — the sprint never lasts long enough for the buffer to collapse in the first place.
Training for the drop, not the score
If your three-minute result sits well below your one-minute result, the instinct is to try harder for a faster number. That trains the wrong thing. The drop is a stamina problem, and stamina responds to deliberately slower practice:
- Run three minutes at about 80% of your sprint speed. The aim is finishing with accuracy unchanged from where it started, not a good WPM.
- Repeat until the last minute matches the first. Flat accuracy across the run means the buffer is holding for the whole three minutes.
- Only then raise the pace, a few WPM at a time, and stop as soon as the final minute starts drifting again.
This is slower than chasing a personal best and it is the thing that actually moves an assessment score, because an assessment is measured at five minutes or longer — well past the point where a sprint has already fallen apart.
