About this keystrokes per hour test

This page is about the measurement rather than a particular keyboard. KPH counts every key you press across an hour, letters, digits, punctuation and spaces alike, and data-entry roles quote it because a column of invoice references has no meaningful word count. The test below reports it beside net WPM so you can read both at once.

Every run reports KPH alongside WPM, so the two units sit side by side.

Tips for a more useful result

  1. Divide KPH by 300 for WPM, and multiply by 300 to go back.
  2. Check whether an advert means alphanumeric or 10-key before comparing yourself.
  3. Watch the adjusted figure. A raw keystroke count with errors in it is not work.
  4. Run longer than a minute before quoting a KPH number to an employer.

What keystrokes per hour actually counts

KPH counts every key you press across an hour. Letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation and the space bar are one keystroke each — there is nothing clever in the definition, which is part of why data entry roles like it.

They quote it instead of words per minute because the material is records rather than prose. Counting “words” in a column of invoice references and amounts does not describe anything a person recognises, whereas counting keys does.

Convert KPH to WPM, or WPM to KPH

The factor is 300, and it is worth understanding once rather than looking up every time. A standard word is five characters, and an hour is sixty minutes, so a single word per minute is 5 × 60 = 300 keystrokes per hour.

So 40 WPM is 12,000 KPH, and 8,000 KPH is about 27 WPM. Multiply to go one way, divide to come back:

Two rows round. 27 WPM is 8,100 KPH exactly, and 33 WPM is 9,900 — they appear here as 8,000 and 10,000 because those are the round figures job adverts quote, and matching your result to an advert is what the table is for. The converter above is exact.

Gross KPH, and the adjusted figure that actually counts

Gross KPH counts every key you pressed, the wrong ones included. Adjusted KPH — net KPH on some reports — is that figure once errors are accounted for. Employers screen on the adjusted number, because raw speed with mistakes in it is not work anybody can use.

It is exactly the relationship between gross and net WPM on a typing test, and how typing scores work sets out how the deduction is calculated here. If your adjusted figure sits well below your gross one, the thing to train is accuracy, not speed.

What KPH the job is likely to ask for

These are the figures that recur across assessment providers and staffing adverts:

  • Alphanumeric data entry — around 8,000 KPH at 95% accuracy (about 27 WPM). Practise on the alphanumeric data entry test.
  • Numeric 10-key — around 10,000 KPH at 95% accuracy (about 33 WPM). Practise on the 10-key typing test.
  • Experienced numeric operators — 12,000 to 15,000 KPH, which is 40 to 50 WPM.

Those two minimums are different scales, not a ranking. Alphanumeric work moves your hands across the full keyboard and shifts for capitals, so its figures run lower and its minimum is set lower to match. Holding one against the other is how people conclude they are failing when they are performing exactly as expected.

Why the data entry number looks lower than an office typing number

This one confuses almost everybody, so it is worth stating plainly. A clerical post asks for 40 WPM, which is 12,000 KPH. A data entry post asks for 8,000 KPH, which is only about 27 WPM. The data entry job looks easier. It is not.

The units are identical; the material is not comparable. Forty WPM is measured on flowing prose, where you read ahead and your hands stay in one region. Eight thousand KPH is measured on structured records, with constant field switching, digits, separators and no sentence to anticipate. A prose speed cannot be carried across to a data entry requirement, in either direction.

Measuring your own KPH

The test above reports KPH beside net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and mistakes, so you can see the adjusted and gross figures together rather than a single headline number.

  1. Use the right material. KPH from a prose test does not predict KPH on records. Practise on numbers or records if the job is data entry.
  2. Run longer than a minute. A one-minute result measures your opening burst. Fatigue registers from the third minute, so use three minutes or five before you quote a figure to anyone.
  3. Read accuracy first. Most assessments gate on accuracy and only rank on speed among candidates who clear the gate.
