Why numbers are scored in KPH, not WPM
Words per minute assumes words. A column of invoice references, rupee amounts and dates has no word count worth measuring, so numeric work is scored in KPH — keystrokes per hour. It counts what you actually did: individual correct keystrokes, including the separators, decimal points and slashes that make numeric entry slower than it looks.

Converting WPM to keystrokes per hour
The conversion is one multiplication: KPH = WPM × 300. A standard typing word counts as five characters, and an hour holds 60 minutes, so WPM × 5 × 60 gives keystrokes per hour.

- 50 WPM — about 15,000 KPH
- 60 WPM — about 18,000 KPH
One caveat worth knowing before you quote a converted number: the conversion carries your accuracy with it. Converting a prose WPM into a KPH figure assumes you would key numbers just as cleanly, and almost nobody does — digits have no context to catch an error for you. What counts as a good numeric speed
Most numeric data-entry roles advertise 8,000 to 10,000 KPH at 95% accuracy or better. Experienced operators sit around 12,000 to 15,000 KPH. Those figures are lower than English typing speeds converted straight across, which is exactly the point above.
Accuracy is the part that decides hiring tests. Most employers set an accuracy floor and only then rank on speed, because a mistyped amount is not a slower keystroke, it is a wrong record. Practise for a clean run before you practise for a fast one.
Number pad or top row
If the work is mostly numeric, use the number pad. It puts ten digits under four fingers with no reaching, which is why dedicated 10-key speeds run well above top-row speeds for the same person. Anchor your middle finger on the 5, which carries a raised bump for exactly this reason, and work outward without looking.
If numbers are mixed into sentences, stay on the top row. Moving a hand across to the keypad and back costs more time than the shorter reach saves. The data-entry test mixes both deliberately, so it is the better rehearsal for record-keeping work.
