About this data entry typing test

What a data entry test actually measures
A data entry test is not a typing test with different words. It measures how well you transfer structured information — names, amounts, dates, reference numbers — from a source into fields, which is what the work consists of.
That is why this test reports completed records alongside speed and accuracy. A record counts only if every character in it is right. One wrong digit makes the whole record wrong, which is exactly how the work is judged: an error still has to be found and corrected, and finding it costs more than typing it did.
WPM or KPH: which will the job ask for?
Both are used, and which one you see depends on the material:
- Mostly numbers — invoices, ledgers, claims. Usually quoted in KPH, keystrokes per hour.
- Mixed text and numbers — customer records, forms. Usually quoted in WPM.
- They convert directly: KPH ÷ 300 = WPM, since a word is conventionally five keystrokes — the KPH typing test converts either way.
This test reports both. If the role is numeric, the 10-key typing test practises the keypad specifically, which is a different finger movement from the number row.
What counts as a good data entry speed
It depends which test you are sitting, and the two are not comparable. Numeric entry keeps three fingers on ten keys; alphanumeric entry moves your hands across the whole keyboard and shifts for capitals. So alphanumeric scores run lower, and the minimums are set lower to match:
- Alphanumeric — around 8,000 KPH at 95% accuracy, about 27 WPM. Practise on the alphanumeric data entry test.
- 10-key numeric — around 10,000 KPH at 95% accuracy, about 33 WPM. Practise on the 10-key typing test.
- General office and clerical typing — quoted in WPM instead, usually 35 to 45 net. See the clerical typing test.
Those are figures that recur across assessment providers and job adverts, not a standard. Every employer sets its own, so the posting in front of you governs — and if it names an assessment, the Prove It data entry test page explains what that family of tests reports.
Why accuracy is weighted so heavily
In prose, a typo is a small embarrassment a reader corrects without noticing. In data entry, a mistyped account number routes money to the wrong place and a mistyped date changes when something is due. The error does not announce itself, which is what makes it expensive.
So the number worth training is not your best burst. It is the fastest pace you can hold while your accuracy stays where you need it. Watch whether accuracy falls as speed rises — the point where it does is your real working speed.
Preparing for a data entry assessment
- Find out the unit. WPM or KPH? The advert or the recruiter will say, and they are not interchangeable numbers to quote back.
- Find out the material. Numeric, or mixed text? Practise the format you will be tested on, not the one you are already comfortable with.
- Ask about minimum accuracy. Many assessments have a floor, below which speed does not count at all.
- Practise at the real length. A one-minute test flatters everyone. Fatigue shows after the third minute, so use three minutes or longer if the assessment is longer.
