About this alphanumeric data entry test
Alphanumeric data entry means records containing letters and numbers together, typed on the full keyboard: a customer name beside an account number, an address with a postcode, an invoice line with a reference and an amount. Your hands travel the whole keyboard and shift for capitals, which is why alphanumeric figures run lower than keypad ones.

What “alphanumeric” means on a job advert
Alphanumeric data entry is entry of material that contains both letters and numbers — a customer name beside an account number, an address with a postcode, an invoice line with a reference and an amount. You use the whole keyboard: the letters, the number row, the punctuation, and the shift key for capitals and symbols.
It is the counterpart to a 10-key test, which covers numbers only and is typed on the numeric keypad. Most employers who test data entry test one or the other, and some test both as separate modules. Find out which before you practise, because they train different movements.
Alphanumeric KPH and 10-key KPH are not the same scale
This is the single most useful thing to know before you look at your result. On a keypad, three fingers cover ten keys without ever leaving home position. In alphanumeric work your hands travel the full width of the keyboard and shift for capitals. So alphanumeric scores run lower, and they are supposed to.
Employers know this, which is why the minimums differ. Comparing the two is how somebody concludes they are failing when they are performing exactly as expected:
- Alphanumeric — around 8,000 KPH at 95% accuracy is the commonly quoted minimum. That is about 27 WPM.
- 10-key numeric — around 10,000 KPH at 95%. About 33 WPM.
- Never hold one against the other. A number without the word “alphanumeric” or “10-key” attached to it does not mean anything yet.
Those are the figures that recur across assessment providers and staffing adverts, not a rule. Requirements vary by employer and by role, so read the posting rather than any published band — including this one.
Converting KPH to WPM, and back
Divide by 300. A word is conventionally five characters and an hour is sixty minutes, so each word per minute is 5 × 60 = 300 keystrokes per hour. The arithmetic is worth doing once, because it makes the numbers on an advert legible:
- 8,000 KPH ≈ 27 WPM
- 10,000 KPH ≈ 33 WPM
- 12,000 KPH = 40 WPM
The KPH typing test converts either direction for you. If an advert quotes WPM for a data entry role, it is usually describing alphanumeric work. If it quotes KPH, check which module it means. The full derivation is in how typing scores work.
Why this test counts completed records
Alongside speed and accuracy, every run here reports completed records: how many whole records you entered with every character right. One wrong digit makes the record wrong, however good the surrounding characters were.
That is stricter than a percentage, and it is closer to how the work is judged. A record with an error does not cost you one keystroke; it costs somebody the time to find it. All the records here are fictional, so no real personal or customer data is ever displayed as practice material.
Preparing for an alphanumeric assessment
- Confirm the module. Alphanumeric, 10-key, or both? They are separate scores and separate practice.
- Confirm the accuracy floor. 95% is the usual one. Below it, speed is frequently not considered at all.
- Practise at the assessment’s length. A one-minute run flatters everybody. Fatigue shows from the third minute, which is why this page defaults to five.
- Type the separators exactly. Commas, hyphens and leading zeros are part of the record, and they are where accuracy is quietly lost.
